APLA Health Center,
CDU/MLK Medical Campus

APLA Health has a long-standing commitment to improving the health and well-being of Black and Latinx communities in South Los Angeles. We have offered our services on the MLK Medical Campus since 2005, serving the needs of the surrounding communities of Watts, Compton, Lynwood and Willowbrook.

In 2019, we broke ground on a new state-of-the-art facility that simultaneously allows us to expand our scope of services and increase our overall capacity to those who need us. Located on the campus of Charles R. Drew University of Medicine and Science, directly across from the Martin Luther King Jr. Community Hospital, this federally qualified health center (FQHC) will be completed in April of 2021. We will provide low-cost health services to more than 5,000 local-area residents annually in the following service categories:

  • Primary medical care
  • Dental care
  • Behavioral healthcare
  • STD screening and treatment
  • HIV testing and prevention services
  • PrEP counseling and management
  • Health education
  • Health insurance enrollment assistance

We will also be expanding our Vance North Necessities of Life Program food pantry, which has been serving the surrounding communities since 2005.

This is APLA Health’s largest financial investment in a health center facility to date. We focus specifically on removing the many health disparities that disproportionately affect communities of color, including higher rates of HIV infection and chronic diseases, and LGBTQ+ individuals who may not seek medical care due to the crushing stigma around sexual orientation and gender identity, including: HIV, sexually transmitted diseases, depression, and substance abuse.

Our new facility will have:

  • 6 exam rooms
  • 5 counseling rooms
  • 4 dental chairs
  • 2 laboratories
  • 2 waiting rooms
  • Dispensary
  • Vance North Necessities of Life Program food pantry
  • Open office areas and medical offices

The facility was designed by Klawiter & Associates, and Evilsizer is the construction lead.
