Internships

At APLA Health our internship opportunities partner you with our passionate staff whose mission is to achieve healthcare equity and promote well-being for the LGBT and other underserved communities and people living with and affected by HIV. Our sites have accommodated a variety of students from many disciplines by providing unpaid clinical and non clinical experiences in order to fulfill educational, personal, and career development rotations and assignments. You will interact with management, gain valuable hands-on experience, and get a first-hand appreciation of the diverse cultures of the patients and clients we serve.
All of our interns must be currently enrolled as an undergraduate, graduate student, preceptor, or dental resident and be eligible to participate in their university intern credit programs.
Our internship program grows every year, and we provide opportunities in a variety of areas of our company including, but not limited to:
- Behavioral Health—Learn more about individual, family, and group counseling as well as how to conduct confidential assessments, consultations, and intakes.
- Clinical—Become a preceptor in one of our primary care clinics and learn more about community health.
- Community Based Research—Conduct research designed to improve the lives of people and communities affected by HIV/AIDS.
- Care Coordination—Assist HIV-positive clients with telephone case management, medical transportation, and overcoming barriers to receiving HIV care.
- Government Affairs—Advance LGBT and social justice initiatives and advocate for optimal HIV/AIDS and healthcare policy.
- Vance North Necessities of Life Program—Provide nutrition education and assist with preparing groceries for our clients.
- Prevention—Assist in one of our prevention programs which consist of risk-reduction trainings, support groups and community events.
- Special Events—Participate in short- or long-term event planning and logistics.

COMMUNITY BASED RESEARCH GAP YEAR INTERN
DIVISION:
Community Based Research
PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
Gap year interns work 24-32 hours per week on a range of different projects over the course of their year at APLA Health. They obtain extensive training in research planning, recruitment, interviewing, analysis, and writing, while taking on progressively more challenging responsibilities over the course of the year.
REQUIREMENTS:
This is a good opportunity for someone who is considering a career in research or medicine, or who is interested in sociological and psychological perspectives on HIV and the experiences of people living with HIV or Black and Latino young gay and bisexual men.

DENTAL CLINIC INTERN
DIVISION:
APLA Health Dental Services
PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
APLA Health’s dental services offer preventive, emergency, and restorative dental treatment to both HIV-positive and HIV-negative patients. Under direction of the office manager, the intern will work with contracted dentists on a variety of levels.
REQUIREMENTS:
Ability to maintain the highest level of confidentiality and professionalism. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Strong computer skills. Willingness to work 20 hours per week minimum for 3-6 months.

HEALTH EDUCATION INTERN
DIVISION:
HIV Access and Community-Based Services
PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
The health education intern will work directly with the director of HIV access and community-based services to develop and evaluate health education initiatives designed for persons living with HIV/AIDS. Field work opportunities include: program evaluation, social marketing, curricula development and implementation, grant writing, and one/one interaction with clients.
REQUIREMENTS:
Open to both undergraduate and graduate students. Ability to maintain the highest level of confidentiality and professionalism. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Strong computer skills. Desire to pursue a professional public health degree.

NOLP ADMINISTRATIVE INTERN
DIVISION:
Client Services
PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
The intern provides assistance and information to people seeking access to the Vance North Necessities of Life Program (NOLP); determines client eligibility for the program; works with outside referral agencies in facilitating the NOLP application process; and assists with the provision of food services to eligible clients in need.
REQUIREMENTS:
Training and Experience:
- Experience in human services field and/or food or restaurant industry is preferred.
- This internship requires a 3-month commitment and a minimum of 10 hours per week.
Knowledge of:
Interviewing and assessment techniques; general knowledge of public benefits programs, primarily SSI, SDI, and MediCal; strong computer skills; data management; HIV/AIDS-related issues; effective communication techniques.

OFFICE SERVICES INTERN
DIVISION:
Volunteer Resources (2 positions)
PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
The intern provides support to the Volunteer Resources program manager and office staff through a variety of tasks—from deploying appropriate volunteers as agency support as needed to accurately completing office work and special projects.
REQUIREMENTS:
Ability to maintain the highest level of confidentiality and professionalism; excellent written and verbal communication skills; strong computer skills, especially MS office; Willingness to work 20 hours per week minimum for 3-6 months.

SHARED ACTION INTERN
PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
The intern develops skills in behavioral intervention models applied to HIV prevention: adopting, adapting, implementing, and evaluating programs, in addition to research and evaluation as it applies to HIV/AIDS services, policy, health education, and health promotion. The Internship is to provide assistance to Shared Action (capacity building assistance program) in enhancing health departments’ technical capacity to implement and sustain effective HIV behavioral interventions and public health strategies as it relates to the National HIV/AIDS Strategy and High Impact HIV Prevention. Interns may perform some of the following duties depending upon the intern’s interest and program needs: conducting needs assessments, providing technical assistance, assisting trainers, conducting formative research on HIV behavioral interventions, entering and managing data, writing evaluation reports, and providing other Shared Action support as needed.
REQUIREMENTS:
A background in public health, public policy, psychology, sociology, or a related field is preferred. Must possess willingness to learn research/evaluation and consulting skills necessary for applied social, behavioral and public policy arena. Intern must also have interest in addressing HIV/AIDS prevention issues for Latinos. Must possess skills in using Microsoft Word/Excel. Must commit for a minimum of 3 months, 10-12 hours a week. Required to complete Internship Agreement form; submit scope of work; attend weekly meeting; develop research project; and present findings to staff. Prior to starting internship, intern must attend a new volunteer orientation, scheduled through Volunteer Resources.

SPECIAL EVENTS INTERN
DIVISION:
Volunteer Resources
PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
The intern will work with the program manager of Volunteer Resources to staff, deploy and oversee volunteers at APLA Health events.
REQUIREMENTS:
Candidate must be willing to work approximately 12-16 hours per week during the time the event is taking place. The intern will be asked to work our major events as they are scheduled throughout the year. They must be available to work the evening/late night of the events. Also required are excellent written and verbal communication skills; strong computer skills; interest in HIV/AIDS and LGBT issues; and ability to work well under pressure. A background in customer service is desirable. A 3- to 6-month commitment is requested.

YOUNG PROFESSIONALS INTERN
DIVISION:
Advancement
PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Work in tandem with Annual Giving Manager to create and deploy social and fundraising programs for young professional’s group (League of Emerging Health Activists)
- Post to social media weekly on behalf of LEHA to advance mission in strategic fashion
- Recruit, train and cultivate volunteers
- Work at various events on behalf of LEHA and manage volunteers
- Work with the Advancement department on an as-needed basis for related projects and tasks
REQUIREMENTS:
- Knowledge of popular social media platforms (Instagram, Facebook, MeetUp, Twitter), scheduling software and ability to read metrics results
- Positive, friendly, outgoing, self starter
- knowledge of Los Angeles County LGBTQ*+ community
